Critical Cure for Sciatica

In the U.S.A., roughly 40% of the population over 20 years old has suffered through an occurrence of radiating pain coming from the sciatic nerve. A bundle of nerves stemming from the base of the spinal cord make up the whole of the sciatic nerve. This nerve, located in the back of the leg, supports the muscles in the back of the thigh, knee, lower leg and the sole of the foot. On either side of the body, this nerve bundle runs through the hip and buttocks where it meets the back of the leg.  Symptoms can affect the lower back, hips, buttocks, feet and/or legs. “In about 90% of cases sciatica is caused by a herniated disc with nerve root compression, but lumbar stenoses and (less often) tumors are possible causes.”

Conditions that can cause sciatica include:

  • Spinal injury
  • Pinched or compressed nerve
  • Spine stenoses
  • Herniated disks
  • Degenerative disk disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tumors, cysts or other growths
  • Conus medullas syndrome
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Injuries
  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes
  • Ageing (45-64)
  • Prolonged sitting
  • A strenuous job/activity
  • Long distance driving/with heavy vibration
  • A weak core
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • Taller/height
  • Stress

As sciatica is typically not a major health concern, many who suffer from it often opt for self-care, as this condition can heal and subside without surgery, although in severe cases, that may be necessary. Research has found that medical marijuana helps many patients with chronic pain, inflammation and stress. Patients could benefit from cannabis even further due to its convenience and efficacy without the risk of addiction.  Medical marijuana may also provide significant improvements in quality of life, general health, psychological wellbeing and sleep.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

  • Radicular pain coming anywhere from your lower back to your feet, including in the feet, shins, knees, thighs, gluteus, and lower back
  • Paresthesia (pins and needles in feet and legs)
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Incontinence
  • Burning sensations
  • Burning pain
  • Vibrations on legs and feet
  • Numbness in toes
  • Leg spasms and tics
  • Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
  • Neuropathy

Radicular pain, of which sciatica is a common form, is a type of nerve pain that radiates from the spine to the legs. The study evaluated the effect of one of the many cannabinoids in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  Author Haggai Sharon, MD, with the Sagol Brain Institute, Tel Aviv Medical Center, commented, ‘Pain is a complex experience that involves both the senses and emotions. Our study results link pain relief from THC with a reduction in the connections between areas of the brain otherwise heavily connected, suggesting that THC may alleviate pain by disrupting signals between these pain processing pathways.’”

As more awareness is brought to cannabinoids, like THC, CBD and CBG, sciatica patients are increasingly turning to medical marijuana for relief.  Hybrid medicinal cannabis strains, such as Critical Cure offer a high concentration of CBD along with a moderate concentration of THC, so patients can get the most medicinal benefits from each dose.  This strain in particular reportedly contains 6% THC as well as 8-12% CBD, making an ideal choice for sciatica patients.

Additionally, tinctures that include a one-to-one ratio of THC and CBD may be the ultimate remedy for sciatica patients, as it could provide relief from inflammation, radicular pain and the insomnia that it causes.   Several medical marijuana patients, like Shaun J. (1-6-21) report finding relief and gave the tincture a five-star rating. Stating that it’s, “great for pain relief, sleep issues, and anxiety.”  Some other self-care treatments include over-the-counter hot/cold packs. Home packs are efficient as well starting with ice packs and moving to hot packs after several days, applying each for 20-minute intervals. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) products, like CBD edibles help to reduce pain and swelling along with inflammation. Physical activities, especially instructor-led somatic stretching to address lower back pain as well as Pilates to increase core strength are recommended by experts.  Additionally, activities that increase cardio rate, such as rapid walking, swimming and in-line skating could help in overall healing.
