Did you know that 50 percent of the population experiences some sort of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

While PTSD is most commonly associated with veterans, many of us experience trauma at some point in our lives. Anxiety and trauma-related disorders are psychiatric diseases with a lifetime prevalence of up to 25 percent.

PTSD is caused by a deficiency of the endocannabinoid system. Multiple studies suggest that the plant-based cannabinoids in marijuana can replenish the body’s supply and reduce some effects of PTSD.

Cannabidiol or CBD is a non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant with enormous therapeutic potential. Although CBD doesn’t make people feel high like THC does, it’s causing quite a buzz among scientists, health professionals, and medical marijuana patients who are using CBD-rich products to treat a wide range of conditions—chronic pain, cancer, Crohn’s, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, PTSD, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, antibiotic-resistant infections, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, and more.

“Growing evidence from human and animal studies indicates that cannabidiol, the main non-psychotomimetic phytocannabinoid present in Cannabis sativa, alleviates anxiety in paradigms assessing innate fear.” — Cannabidiol Regulation of Learned Fear: Implications for Treating Anxiety-Related Disorders

Research published in Molecular Psychiatry showed that “plant-derived cannabinoids [psychoactive chemicals] such as marijuana may possess some benefits in individuals with PTSD by helping relieve haunting nightmares and other symptoms of PTSD.” In this study, participants reported a decrease in re-experiencing the trauma, less avoidance of situations that reminded them of the trauma, and a decline in hyper-arousal.

Four Best Cannabis Strains for Managing PTSD

In a study on veterans with PTSD, researchers reported that “in most cases, a significant improvement in quality of life and pain, with some positive changes in severity of posttraumatic stress disorder was observed.

And the Veteran Program Coordinator for the Canadian Cannabis Clinics, Shelley Franklin, asserted that “Medical cannabis strains with the right CBD and THC [psychoactive chemicals in cannabis] levels are assisting veterans with chronic physical pain, as well anxiety and insomnia issues.”

If you’re looking for treatment, it’s important to find the ideal strain and dosage that works best for you. Some patients find that high THC strains work for their PTSD symptoms while others find more relief with high CBD strains.
